Accessibility Notes
Staff is friendly, and ready to help however they can. For example, staff can help: open and close any doors, help you find quiet areas if needed, etc.
There is a wheelchair and folding chair available upon request, although supply is limited and is first come first serve.
A white board and markers are available as an alternate form of communication, if needed.
The location is service animal friendly, but not pet friendly.
There is a large area for accessible parking about 300-350 feet away from the main accessible entrance.
The pathway from the parking lot to the accessible entrance of the property is mostly smooth asphalt and a stone-like sidewalk that is step and barrier free.
The surface of the location’s outdoor paths are mostly stone paver paths and gravel paths that can be uneven in spots, with a step up or down here or there.
The buildings and gardens often have steps and thresholds to access them, but there are a few portable ramps that can be moved around to help with access, however the slope of the ramp will vary based on the height of the step and the length of the ramp, which may be challenging for some. Please give staff members a call at (804) 353-4241 to request help moving or setting up ramps.
The interior of the buildings have at least some space to maneuver mobility devices.
The majority of interior pathways are accessible, with a few exceptions which are mostly upstairs spaces that have no elevator to them, as well as being slightly narrow between pieces of furniture.
Some of the interior spaces are dimly lit, which may be challenging for some, but there are a few flashlights, which are often used by tour guides.
There are picture books/guides that are available, as well as a 3D model of the house that allow individuals to experience the upstairs space if stairs are a challenge.
Stairs in the main building, to and on, the second floor, and staircases throughout the garden space, may be a challenge for some individuals as they are lacking handrails at some points, or only have handrails on one side, and many of the staircases have no handrail extensions.
There are some seating options available throughout with seating surfaces at accessible heights
The point of sale counter in the main building and the gift shop are both slightly above an accessible height, but staff can provide assistance with credit cards or exchange of money for purchases if needed.
There is some merchandise in the visitor center that may be difficult to reach for some, but there are a few grabber tools available which may help, and staff is able to assist if needed.
The site is generally not too noisy.
There are quiet spaces available in the Williams Room and the gardens.
Ask staff for a more quiet, private space if needed.
Windows in most of the buildings have curtains if a darker space is needed.
There are several single stall, gender neutral restrooms, two of which can accommodate most wheelchairs and have grab bars around the toilet, and both are located near the Williams room in the main building.
